Can ZEP Holders Travel In and Out of South Africa?

The ZEP extension notice says holders may be allowed to depart and enter South Africa during the extension period, provided they meet other entry and departure requirements. Travel still needs careful document checks.

Reviewed 5 August 2026. ZEP guidance checked against the South African Government statement of 15 April 2026, Minister’s Immigration Directive No. 21 of 2025, and VFS Global ZEP service pages. This is information only, not legal advice.

Documents to Carry

  • Valid Zimbabwean passport with enough validity for the trip.
  • Current ZEP permit or proof of ZEP status.
  • Copy of the official ZEP extension notice or government statement.
  • VFS receipt or tracking proof if any related application is pending.
  • Employment, study or business proof if your travel purpose may be questioned.
  • Return ticket, accommodation and funds if required by airline or border checks.

Before You Book

Check the current DHA/VFS position before buying a non-refundable ticket. Airline staff may not know every South African immigration concession, so carry official source copies and allow extra time at check-in.

When Travel Is Riskier

Get advice before travelling if your passport is expiring, you have an unresolved overstay/V-list issue, your ZEP document details do not match your passport, or you have a pending mainstream visa application and are unsure whether departure affects it.
