South Africa Visa Application Guide

Detailed information on applying for a South African visa, including visa types, requirements, application process through VFS Global, and processing times.

Visa Categories

Purpose: Tourism, visiting family/friends, attending events.

Duration: Up to 90 days (extendable once while in SA).

Requirements: Valid passport (30+ days beyond departure), completed DHA-84 form, return ticket, proof of accommodation, proof of sufficient funds (bank statements for 3 months), travel insurance, two passport photos.

Processing: 5-15 working days. Apply at SA embassy/consulate or VFS Global centre.

Purpose: Business meetings, conferences, negotiations (no employment).

Duration: Up to 90 days.

Additional Requirements: Letter of invitation from SA company, proof of business activities, company registration documents.

Purpose: Employment in South Africa.

Duration: Up to 5 years.

Requirements: Job offer from SA employer, proof employer tried to hire locally, SAQA evaluation of qualifications, police clearance, medical certificate. Employer must demonstrate the position could not be filled by a South African citizen.

Purpose: Professionals in designated scarce skills categories.

Duration: Up to 5 years.

Key Feature: Does not require a job offer. Applicants must hold qualifications in a field listed on the Critical Skills List published by the DTIC. Professional body registration may be required. Faster processing than general work visas (4-8 weeks).

Purpose: Full-time study at a South African institution (courses longer than 90 days).

Requirements: Acceptance letter from accredited SA institution, proof of payment/financial guarantee, medical certificate, police clearance, medical insurance, parental consent for minors. Processing: 8-12 weeks.

Purpose: Retirement in South Africa.

Requirements: Proof of minimum income of R37,000 per month (pension, investments, retirement annuity), or lump sum equivalent. Medical insurance, police clearance, medical certificate. Valid for up to 4 years, renewable.

VFS Global Application Centres

Many South African visa applications are processed through VFS Global, which operates application centres in numerous countries. VFS Global collects biometric data, documents, and fees on behalf of the DHA.

Important: Check whether your country uses VFS Global or direct embassy submission. VFS Global centres are available in the UK, India, China, Nigeria, and many other countries.

Overstay Penalties

Overstaying your visa results in a ban: up to 30 days overstay = 1-year ban; 30+ days = 5-year ban. Always depart before your visa expires or apply for an extension at a DHA office within South Africa.
