ZEP Extension
ZEP Extension to May 2027: What It Means
The latest official position is that current Zimbabwean Exemption Permits remain valid until May 2027 while Home Affairs completes consultation on the long-term future of ZEP and LEP permits.
Reviewed 5 August 2026. ZEP guidance checked against the South African Government statement of 15 April 2026, Minister’s Immigration Directive No. 21 of 2025, and VFS Global ZEP service pages. This is information only, not legal advice.
The Date Issue: 28 May or 29 May 2027?
The Government Gazette directive extends ZEP validity until 28 May 2027. A later South African Government media statement says current permits remain valid until 29 May 2027. For practical planning, holders should treat the official extension as running to late May 2027 and verify the exact date with DHA or VFS if a deadline-sensitive application, employer check or travel booking depends on it.
What the Extension Does
- It keeps existing ZEPs valid during the extension period.
- It protects holders from being treated as invalid only because the exemption would otherwise have expired.
- It allows time for public consultation and a policy recommendation to Cabinet.
- It does not create automatic permanent residence.
- It does not remove the need to qualify for another visa if the holder wants a mainstream immigration route.
