Citizenship Retention -- Critical for SA Citizens in Europe
If you are planning to acquire British, Irish, German, Dutch, or any other European citizenship, you MUST apply for retention of your SA citizenship BEFORE naturalising.
Under Section 6(1)(a) of the SA Citizenship Act, you automatically lose your SA citizenship when you acquire foreign citizenship without prior ministerial permission. Apply using Form BI-1664 at your nearest SA mission. Processing takes 6-18 months, so start early. See our retention guide.
