South Africa maintains diplomatic missions across North America, South America, and the Caribbean. These embassies serve the large South African diaspora communities in the USA, Canada, and Brazil, and facilitate growing trade and investment relationships across the Western Hemisphere.
Key Missions in the Americas
United States
South Africa has an embassy in Washington, D.C., and consulates-general in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The USA is South Africa’s largest trading partner outside Africa, with bilateral trade exceeding $20 billion annually. SA benefits from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) for preferential market access.
SA diaspora: An estimated 80,000-100,000 South Africans live in the United States.
Canada
The SA High Commission in Ottawa serves the large South African community in Canada, estimated at 40,000-60,000 people. Canada and South Africa cooperate on mining, education, and governance. There is also a consulate in Toronto.
Visa: SA passport holders require a visa or eTA to enter Canada. Apply well in advance.
Brazil
South Africa and Brazil are fellow BRICS members with strong diplomatic and trade relations. The SA embassy in Brasilia handles growing demand for trade facilitation, particularly in mining, agriculture, and automotive sectors.
Visa: SA passport holders can enter Brazil visa-free for up to 90 days.
