What to Expect on Safari

Morning Game Drive

Wake at 5:00-5:30am. Coffee and rusks. Depart at first light (around 5:30-6:00am). This is the best time for predator sightings as lions, leopards, and cheetahs are active. Drive for 3-4 hours with a bush coffee stop. Return to lodge/camp for brunch by 9:30-10:00am.

Afternoon Game Drive

Depart at 3:30-4:00pm as temperatures cool. Animals become active again after resting through midday heat. Sundowner drinks stop in the bush. On private reserves, drives continue after dark with spotlights to find nocturnal species. Return for dinner at 7:30-8:00pm.

Self-Drive Safari

Available at Kruger, Addo, Pilanesberg, and other SANParks reserves. Drive your own car (SUV/4x4 preferred but not essential on tarred roads). Follow marked roads, observe speed limits (50 km/h tar, 40 km/h gravel), and stay in your vehicle at all times except at designated stops. Gates open at sunrise, close at sunset -- plan accordingly.

Walking Safari

Guided bush walks with armed rangers. Available at most private reserves and some SANParks camps. Groups of 4-8 people. Focus on tracks, plants, insects, and smaller creatures you miss from a vehicle. Thrilling close encounters with wildlife on foot. Minimum age usually 12-16 years.

What to Pack for Safari

  • Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, brown) -- avoid white, bright colours, and camouflage (illegal in some areas)
  • Warm layers -- mornings on open vehicles are cold (5-10C in winter)
  • Sun hat and sunscreen (SPF 50+)
  • Comfortable closed shoes for walking safaris
  • Binoculars -- essential for bird watching and distant wildlife
  • Camera with zoom lens (200mm minimum, 400mm+ ideal)
  • Insect repellent with DEET (30-50%) in malaria areas
  • Torch/flashlight for walking around camps at night
  • Reusable water bottle -- stay hydrated
  • Power bank -- some camps have limited electricity hours

Frequently Asked Questions

The dry winter months (May-September) offer the best game viewing as vegetation is sparse and animals gather at water sources. However, summer (October-March) brings lush landscapes, baby animals, and migratory birds. Private reserves offer excellent year-round viewing.

Yes. Aquila Private Game Reserve and Inverdoorn are 2-2.5 hours from Cape Town and offer Big 5 day trips and overnight stays. They are malaria-free. For a more authentic experience, Addo Elephant National Park is about 7 hours east on the Garden Route. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in the Little Karoo (3.5 hours) is another excellent malaria-free option.

Yes, self-drive safaris in Kruger are very safe and popular. Stay in your vehicle, keep windows up around predators, follow speed limits, and never get out except at designated rest camps and picnic spots. The main tar roads are suitable for all vehicles, though a higher vehicle gives better viewing. Download the Kruger Sightings app for real-time animal locations.

Minimum 2 nights / 3 days for a meaningful experience. Ideally 3-4 nights to cover different areas of a park. For Kruger, 4-5 nights allows you to explore both southern (best for Big 5) and central (best for predators) sections. A single day trip is possible at Pilanesberg or Addo but overnight is much better.
