  • Gravel roads require higher clearance (SUV recommended)
  • Speed limit: 50km/h tar, 40km/h gravel
  • Must be in camp by gate closing time (sunset)
  • Fuel available at main rest camps

Guided Safari

  • Expert guides know where to find animals
  • Open-top vehicles for better viewing and photography
  • Sunrise and sunset drives (outside self-drive hours)
  • Night drives to see nocturnal animals
  • Bush walks with armed rangers
  • SANParks drives: R330-R400 per person
  • Private lodges: all-inclusive with 2 drives per day

Health & Safety

Malaria Precautions

Kruger is in a malaria risk area, especially during the wet season (Oct-Apr). Consult your doctor about antimalarial medication before travelling. Use insect repellent (DEET-based), wear long sleeves after sunset, and sleep under nets or in air-conditioned rooms. Risk is lower in the dry winter months.

Park Rules

  • Never exit your vehicle except at designated areas (rest camps, picnic spots, hides)
  • Do not feed animals -- it is illegal and dangerous
  • Speed limits: 50km/h tar, 40km/h gravel. Animals have right of way
  • Gate times: gates open at sunrise and close at sunset (times vary by month)
  • No off-road driving -- stay on marked roads at all times
  • Report poaching or suspicious activity to SANParks: 0800 205 005

Frequently Asked Questions

Minimum 2 nights, ideally 3-5 nights. Two nights gives you one full day of game driving. With 4-5 nights you can explore different regions, do a night drive, and have better chances of spotting all the Big Five. The more time you spend, the more you see.

The dry season (May-October) offers the best game viewing. Animals are easier to spot when vegetation is sparse, and they gather at waterholes. July-September is peak season. Leopard and lion sightings are best on early morning and late afternoon drives.

Kruger is a malaria area. Antimalarial medication is recommended, especially October-April (wet season). Consult your doctor or travel clinic. The risk is lower May-September. Use DEET repellent, wear long sleeves at dusk, and sleep in screened or air-conditioned accommodation.
