Garden Route Travel Guide 2026
The Garden Route is South Africa’s most celebrated road trip, stretching 300km along the spectacular southern coast from Mossel Bay to Storms River. Named for its lush indigenous forests, dramatic coastline, turquoise lagoons, and year-round mild climate, the Garden Route offers everything from adrenaline-pumping adventures to tranquil nature walks, whale watching, and world-class golf.
Key Stops Along the Route
Mossel Bay
The official start of the Garden Route. Visit the Dias Museum (marking Bartolomeu Dias’s 1488 landing), surf at Santos Beach, cage dive with great white sharks at Seal Island, and post a letter in the famous boot-shaped post office tree (still in use since 1500). The warmest sea on the Garden Route.
Wilderness
A tranquil village between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean. Paragliding from Map of Africa viewpoint, canoeing on the Touw River to a waterfall, and long walks on the wild beach. Wilderness National Park protects the coastal lakes system. Perfect for 1-2 nights of relaxation.
Knysna
The jewel of the Garden Route. Famous for the Knysna Heads (towering sandstone cliffs guarding the lagoon entrance), oysters, the Knysna Elephant Park, and the Featherbed Nature Reserve. The Waterfront has restaurants, craft markets, and boat cruises. The Knysna Forest has ancient yellowwood trees and Knysna loeries (turacos). Stay 2-3 nights.
Plettenberg Bay
“Plett” -- South Africa’s premier beach resort town. Beautiful beaches (Robberg, Lookout, Central), Robberg Nature Reserve peninsula hike (9km, 4 hours), whale and dolphin watching (Jun-Nov), Monkeyland primate sanctuary, Birds of Eden free-flight dome, and the Crags area. Stay 2-3 nights.
Tsitsikamma & Storms River
The Garden Route’s adventure capital. The Storms River Mouth suspension bridge walk (1km, dramatic coastal scenery), Tsitsikamma canopy tour (treetop ziplines through ancient forest), world’s highest commercial bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge (216m), and the Otter Trail (5-day hike, book 12 months ahead). Stay 1-2 nights.
George & Oudtshoorn
George is the Garden Route’s largest town with the Fancourt golf estate. Detour inland to Oudtshoorn for the Cango Caves (spectacular limestone formations), ostrich farms, and the spectacular Swartberg Pass (gravel mountain pass to Prince Albert). A worthwhile 1-2 day detour.
