New: Doorstep Passport Delivery

Since November 2026, South Africans abroad can receive their renewed passports delivered to their door via courier, eliminating the need for a second embassy visit. The service launched in London, Dubai, Perth, Auckland, New York, Ottawa, Berlin, and The Hague, with more cities being added throughout 2026.

When to Renew Your Passport

You should renew your South African passport if:

  • Expiring within 6 months: Many countries refuse entry if your passport expires within 6 months of your travel date
  • Already expired: You can still renew at an embassy even after expiry — there is no penalty
  • Pages are full: Fewer than 2-3 blank pages remaining (many countries require at least 2 blank pages for entry)
  • Damaged: Water damage, torn pages, defaced cover
  • Name change: After marriage, divorce, or legal name change
  • Upgrading: Moving from 32-page to 48-page Maxi Tourist Passport
Plan ahead: Apply at least 3-4 months before your passport expires or before planned travel. Processing from abroad takes 6-8 weeks, and delays can occur.

Passport Renewal Fees (Abroad)

When renewing abroad at an embassy, high commission, consulate, or VFS Global centre, the DHA overseas fee schedule applies:

Passport TypeDHA Fee (ZAR)ValidityProcessing Time
Adult 32-page Standard PassportR1,200 + local surcharge10 years6-8 weeks
Adult 48-page Maxi Tourist PassportR2,400 + local surcharge10 years6-8 weeks
Child Passport (under 16)R1,200 + local surcharge5 years6-8 weeks
For comparison: Renewing within South Africa at a DHA office costs R600 (32-page) or R1,200 (48-page). The overseas fee is double the domestic rate. VFS Global centres charge an additional service fee on top of DHA fees. See the full fee schedule for all DHA tariffs.

Replacement Passport (Lost or Stolen)

If your passport was lost or stolen through your own negligence, the replacement fee is double the standard rate (i.e., R2,400 for a 32-page passport abroad). If lost through no fault of your own (e.g., robbery with police report), the standard fee applies.

Step-by-Step Renewal Process (Abroad)

Step 1Gather Your Documents

Before booking your appointment, prepare all of the following:

Adult Applicants (16+)

  • Current South African passport (even if expired)
  • South African ID document — Smart ID card or green ID book (certified copy accepted)
  • Completed passport application form BI-73
  • Two passport-sized photographs (white background, 35mm x 45mm) — some missions take photos digitally
  • Proof of legal residence in the host country (visa, residence permit, work permit)
  • Payment of applicable fee

Child Applicants (Under 16) — Additional Documents

  • Child's unabridged birth certificate (showing both parents' names)
  • Consent from both parents (Form BI-517) or court order granting full parental rights
  • Certified copies of both parents' ID documents or passports
  • Child must be present in person for biometric capture
Tip: If you do not have a Smart ID card, your green ID book is sufficient. You do not need a Smart ID to renew your passport abroad.

Step 2Book an Appointment

All missions operate by appointment only for passport services. You have two channels:

Direct via Embassy

Email or call the consular section of your nearest South African embassy, high commission, or consulate. Find contact details in our embassy directory.

Via VFS Global

Book online through the VFS Global passport portal. VFS centres are available in multiple countries and may offer more convenient locations and appointment times.

Peak times: Book well in advance during December holidays, school breaks, and before major visa-free travel seasons.

Step 3Attend in Person for Biometric Capture

You must attend your appointment in person — no proxy or postal applications. At the mission or VFS centre:

  • Your identity and documents are verified
  • Your fingerprints are captured digitally (DHA Live Capture system)
  • Your photograph and digital signature are captured
  • Your completed BI-73 form and payment are accepted
Live Capture vs Manual: Missions with DHA Live Capture equipment process applications digitally, resulting in faster turnaround (~5 weeks). Missions without Live Capture submit manual (paper) applications that are sent to Pretoria by diplomatic pouch, taking 6-8+ weeks.

Step 4Wait for Processing

Your application is forwarded to the Department of Home Affairs in Pretoria for processing and passport printing.

Live Capture missions~5 weeks processing
Manual applications6-8 weeks minimum (can be longer during backlogs)
Within South Africa (for comparison)4-6 weeks standard; 2 weeks at some Live Capture offices

Track your application: Contact the embassy where you applied, or check via the DHA online portal.

Step 5Collect or Receive Your Passport

Option A: Embassy Collection

Collect in person at the mission where you applied. Bring your receipt/reference number and any ID. Your old passport (cancelled with a perforation/stamp) will be returned to you.

Option B: Doorstep Delivery (New)

Since November 2026, passports can be couriered to your address, eliminating the second embassy visit. Available in London, Dubai, Perth, Auckland, New York, Ottawa, Berlin, and The Hague. Delivery within 24-72 hours once passport is issued.

Important: Keep your old cancelled passport — it contains valid visas that most countries still honour. When travelling, carry both your new and old passport.

VFS Global — What You Need to Know

VFS Global operates passport application centres on behalf of the South African government in multiple countries. Since July 2026, VFS has expanded significantly, giving overseas South Africans more options beyond embassies.

Key facts about VFS Global centres:

  • Same application: You submit the same BI-73 form and documents as at an embassy
  • Biometric capture: VFS centres have DHA Live Capture equipment
  • Additional fee: VFS charges a service fee on top of DHA fees (varies by country)
  • Booking: Online appointment booking at passport.vfsglobal.com
  • More locations: VFS centres may be closer to you than the embassy — check for centres in your city
  • Collection: Collect your passport from the VFS centre or opt for courier delivery where available

Frequently Asked Questions

A standard 32-page passport costs R1,200 and a 48-page Maxi Tourist Passport costs R2,400 when renewed at an embassy or consulate abroad. These are the DHA overseas fees — missions also add a local currency surcharge. VFS Global centres charge an additional service fee. Within South Africa, the fees are half: R600 (32-page) and R1,200 (48-page).

Yes, you can renew an expired South African passport at any embassy or consulate abroad. There is no penalty for renewing after expiry. Bring your expired passport along with the other required documents. If your passport has been expired for an extended period, consider also bringing additional proof of SA citizenship.

Processing takes approximately 6-8 weeks from abroad, as applications are sent to the Department of Home Affairs in Pretoria for printing. Missions with DHA Live Capture equipment may process faster (~5 weeks). Within South Africa, standard processing is 4-6 weeks. During peak periods or DHA backlogs, processing may take longer.

No, you do not need a Smart ID card. Your green ID book or a certified copy of your ID document is sufficient. If you have a Smart ID card, bring it as it streamlines verification. Smart ID cards are generally not available at missions abroad — most overseas South Africans must apply for one when visiting South Africa.

The BI-73 is the official DHA passport application form. You can download it from the DHA website or collect it at your embassy or VFS Global centre. The form requires your personal details, reason for application, and must be completed in black ink. Some missions and VFS centres fill in the form electronically during your appointment.

South African citizens cannot normally hold two valid SA passports simultaneously. In exceptional circumstances (e.g., frequent travel to countries that conflict with each other), the DHA may approve a second passport. You must apply through the DHA with written motivation for the request.

Your old passport will be cancelled with a perforation or stamp and returned to you. Valid visas in the old passport generally remain valid — when travelling, carry both your new passport and the old one with the valid visas. Contact the visa-issuing country's embassy to confirm their specific policy on visas in cancelled passports.

Most missions require you to collect your passport in person with your receipt/reference number. Some missions allow a family member with a signed authorisation letter and their own ID to collect on your behalf. Alternatively, if doorstep delivery is available in your city, your passport can be couriered directly to your address, eliminating the need for collection entirely.
