Vaccinations for South Africa — 2026 Guide
South Africa has no mandatory vaccinations for travellers arriving directly from Europe, North America, or non-endemic countries. However, a Yellow Fever certificate is required if arriving from or transiting through a Yellow Fever endemic country. Several vaccines are recommended for all visitors.
Yellow Fever Rule: If you are arriving from or transiting through a Yellow Fever endemic country (including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, or Brazil), you MUST have a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. Travellers flying directly from the UK, US, Europe, or Australia do NOT need Yellow Fever vaccination.
Yellow Fever Certificate — Conditional Requirement
| When required | Only if arriving from/transiting through a Yellow Fever endemic country |
| Not required if | Flying direct from UK, US, Europe, Australia, UAE, or other non-endemic countries |
| Transit rule | If transiting through Ethiopia (Addis Ababa), Kenya, or other endemic countries even without leaving the airport, South Africa MAY require the certificate |
| Certificate validity | Lifetime |
| Penalty | Denied entry or quarantined for up to 6 days |
Common scenario: If your flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town connects through Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), Nairobi (Kenya Airways), or Lagos — you need the Yellow Fever certificate even if you are originally from the UK or US. Direct flights from London, Atlanta, or New York do NOT require it.

South Africa context: SA has better water and food hygiene infrastructure than most of Africa, so Typhoid and Cholera are lower-priority compared to West/East Africa. However, Hepatitis A and Rabies remain important. SA has one of the highest rabies rates in southern Africa, especially from stray dogs and wildlife in rural areas.
COVID-19 Requirements (2026)
South Africa removed all COVID-19 entry requirements in 2023. As of 2026, there are no vaccination, testing, or quarantine requirements for COVID-19.
