Safety Tips

General Safety

  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially in urban centres
  • Avoid displaying expensive jewellery, cameras, or smartphones in public
  • Use reputable transport services (Uber, Bolt) rather than unlicensed taxis
  • Keep car doors locked and windows up when driving
  • Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas

Protecting Valuables

  • Use hotel safes for passports, cash, and electronics
  • Carry certified copies of your passport, not the original
  • Keep separate copies of important documents in digital form
  • Use ATMs inside banks or shopping centres, not on the street
  • Be vigilant at popular tourist spots for pickpockets

Health Requirements

Yellow Fever Certificate

A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers arriving from or transiting through yellow fever endemic countries in Africa and South America. Without this certificate, you may be denied entry or placed in quarantine. The vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before arrival.

Malaria Risk Areas

Malaria is present in the low-altitude areas of:

  • Limpopo Province (northern border areas)
  • Mpumalanga (including Kruger National Park and surrounding game reserves)
  • Northern KwaZulu-Natal (along the Mozambique border)

Risk is highest during the wet season (October-May). Anti-malarial prophylaxis is recommended. Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban (city), and the Garden Route are malaria-free.

Recommended Vaccinations

No vaccinations are legally required (except yellow fever from endemic areas). Recommended: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Tetanus/Diphtheria. South Africa has world-class private hospitals (Netcare, Mediclinic, Life Healthcare). Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Water & Food Safety

Tap water in major cities (Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban) is generally safe to drink. In rural areas, bottled water is recommended. Food hygiene standards in restaurants are generally good, particularly in tourist areas.
