ETC Details
- Validity: Single journey only -- return to South Africa or travel to the nearest SA mission
- Processing: 1-3 working days in most cases; same-day for genuine emergencies
- Cost: Varies by mission (typically R200-R500)
- Requirements: Police report (if stolen), proof of SA citizenship, passport photos, completed application form
Steps if You Lose Your Passport
1Report to Police
Report the loss or theft to local police immediately. Obtain a written police report -- you will need this for the ETC application and for your insurance claim.
2Contact SA Mission
Contact the nearest South African embassy, high commission, or consulate during office hours. For after-hours emergencies, call DIRCO at +27 12 351 1000.
3Apply for ETC
Visit the mission with: police report, any ID copies you have, two passport photos, and completed application. The mission will verify your identity with DHA Pretoria.
4New Passport
Once back in South Africa (or at a mission), apply for a replacement passport. The ETC cannot be used for ongoing travel beyond the single permitted journey.
Other Emergency Situations
Medical Emergency
SA missions can assist with locating medical facilities, contacting family, and liaising with travel insurers. They cannot pay medical bills but can help facilitate payments.
Arrest or Detention
If arrested abroad, you have the right to contact the South African embassy. The mission can provide a list of local lawyers, visit you in detention, and inform your family.
Natural Disaster / Crisis
During natural disasters or civil unrest, DIRCO coordinates evacuations and assistance for South African citizens. Register with the nearest mission for updates.
Death Abroad
SA missions assist with death registration, repatriation of remains, and liaising with local authorities. Contact the mission and DIRCO immediately.
