Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. SA medical degrees from all 10 medical schools are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and recognised by the GMC (UK), AMC (Australia), MCC (Canada), and other licensing bodies. You still need to pass local licensing exams (PLAB for UK, AMC exams for Australia, etc.) to practise.

Nursing has the most streamlined process, especially for the UK (NMC CBT + OSCE, no degree assessment needed). Physiotherapy and occupational therapy also have relatively smooth HCPC registration processes. Doctors face the most rigorous process with multi-part exams. Pharmacists must complete conversion programmes in most countries.

It depends on the country. The UK GMC can register specialists through the CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route based on your training and experience. Australia has specialist pathway through relevant colleges. Canada requires provincial college assessment. The process is more complex than for general practitioners.

Completing community service is required by HPCSA for independent practice in SA, but it is not typically required by foreign licensing bodies. However, having completed community service demonstrates clinical experience and is viewed favourably. Some countries do require minimum years of post-qualification experience.
