South African Document Apostille & Authentication
South African documents destined for use abroad often need to be apostilled or authenticated by DIRCO (Department of International Relations and Cooperation). This guide explains the process, costs, and timelines.
Apostille vs Authentication
Apostille (Hague Convention)
For countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention (UK, Australia, EU, USA, etc.). A single apostille stamp from DIRCO certifies the document for use in any member country. Simpler and faster.
Authentication (Non-Hague)
For countries not in the Hague Convention (e.g., UAE, some African countries). Requires DIRCO authentication followed by legalisation at the destination country's embassy in South Africa. Two-step process.
Documents That Need Apostille
- Birth certificates (unabridged and abridged)
- Marriage certificates
- Death certificates
- Police clearance certificates
- Academic qualifications (degrees, diplomas, transcripts)
- Commercial documents (company registrations, board resolutions)
- Court orders
- Notarial deeds and declarations
- Powers of attorney
- Medical reports and certificates

3Collect
Standard processing: 6-8 weeks. Expedited (through accredited service providers): 1-2 weeks at higher cost.
Apostille from Abroad
If you are living abroad and need a SA document apostilled, your options are:
Someone in SA
Ask a family member or trusted person in South Africa to submit documents to DIRCO on your behalf.
Service Provider
Use an accredited apostille service provider. They handle the entire process including collection and courier. Faster but more expensive.
SA Embassy
Some SA embassies can facilitate document authentication. Contact your embassy to confirm if they offer this service.
