About the South African Passport

The South African machine-readable passport, commonly known as the "green mamba" due to its distinctive green cover, is issued by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). It contains biometric data and complies with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The passport is valid for 10 years for adults (16 and older) and 5 years for children under 16.

  • Completed BI-73 application form (available at the mission)
  • Proof of legal residence in the host country (visa, residence permit)
  • For children: unabridged birth certificate, consent from both parents (Form BI-517), parents' IDs
  • If name has changed: certified copy of marriage certificate or court order

DHA Live Capture System

The Department of Home Affairs has been rolling out Live Capture units to South African missions abroad. This biometric system captures your fingerprints, photograph, and signature digitally, enabling faster and more secure processing.

Missions with Live Capture

Not all missions have Live Capture units. Contact your nearest embassy or high commission to confirm availability. Where Live Capture is not available, manual applications are processed and sent to Pretoria, which may take longer.
